Strange bayonet

Post by NICO56 »

Hi,
I wanted to present to you this strange Arab bayonet, perhaps Egyptian. Apart from the absence of tooth on the blade already mentioned in this forum. I observe a length of sheath with the other Egyptian models. Do you have an explanation for this shorter length?
Thanks

After comparison with a Russian scabbard, it seems the scabbards of my Maadi are longer. The bayonet that comes to acquire would be a model from Eastern Europe but engraved with Arabic style numerals (identical scabbard and bayonet)? I don't understand anything anymore, I need a compass to orient myself !!!

I just measured. The MAADI scabbards measure almost 22 cm while the other measures approximately 20.5 cm.

You are correct. This bayonet and scabbard appear to be Egyptian. Mainly due to the numbering. The scabbards are different in length and construction. One has a forged/cast/machined cutter plate. The longer one has a cutter plate stamped out of metal plate. Most of the Egyptian made ones had the long version, but they could have also made or imported the short ones from other ComBloc countries. Same goes for the bayonets, some are found with different machining and with and without saw teeth. They may have used imported blade blanks or just omitted machining steps to save time and expense. Many variations of this type of bayonet and scabbard have turned up during the various middle east conflicts. No one seems to know or document where or who made them. It is interesting to read through all the headings under "Egypt" and "Iraq" to see all the unusual ones. They also appear in several reference books including Martin Ivie's.

FWIW & FYI
Here's a reference chart for Arabic numerals 1-10.

Here is an other example of MAADI without sawteeth. As I can see, the leather of MAADI hanger have the same design than polish 6H3 and 6H4.
Why not a contract from Poland to Egypt with leather and blades (without sawteeth) to be reworked in place?

I got one like that, came from Lybian's soldiers defeated after "the battle of Toyota's" against Chadian army.

Perhaps Lybian made?
