Kalashnikov Bayonets of the World

This is what is advertised as a Chinese Type 85 bayonet and scabbard. There is no verification that this bayonet was ever made for or issued to the Chinese military, (PLA). It appears to be an up-dated Chinese Type 81 bayonet that has been redesigned as a wire cutter and mounts on the Type 81 weapons. No documentation of the bayonet has been found but similar blades can be found in military pictures. The bayonet I received came in a fitted "presentation" type box and from all appearances seems to be non-military bayonet made for the collectors trade. The construction feels flimsy, especially the release catch which is almost toy like. Weak spring, small thin catch and machine screw that are not staked in place. No numbers or any type of marking. I purchased this item as a "representative" example and to find out what the small "lever" was on the back side of the scabbard cutter plate. It is a can opener! It is non-moving and is permanently held in place by rivets. Mike

For me it's simply a bad copy of the T87 experimental bayonet... seems to come from the same manufacturer than the T81 reproduction.

Original it is a China M.87 multifunction bayonet.
That was built with many mistakes, deliberate or not!?
Also the designation "M.85" is not correct!
Who built it is unknown, I think in the Asian region.
Based on the very good workmanship, I'm typing on Vietnam.
To compare a original China M.87 from David's collection.

Can opener fitted on scabbard, they are spoiling their soldiers.

Back in my days, everyone in my unit carried a 'multitool' called an 'Opinel' lock knife, which did everything, including opening tin cans, a necessity most guys picked up in basic training.

Back a little farther in my day we all carried a USGI P38 can opener from back in the 1940s. Always there just like the dog tags. Still have one on my key chains. Mike

I carry a P38 in the watch pocket of my jeans. Quit the key ring think when I ripped my leg open one day while pulling my keys out of my pocket in a hurry. I also keep the larger version of the P38 (forgot the designation) in my desk drawer at work.
